On any adventure, it's important to be prepared ... Here are my suggestions for a safe, fun, and successful adventure:
Alltrails
Alltrails is my go to source for navigation when going on a hike. The free version of the app requires a cell signal, but I recommend investing in the premium version so you can download maps and directions for the times you have a weak or no signal on the trail. Following markers on the trail works just fine too, but for someone like myself who gets lost easily it's nice to have peace of mind you're staying on track.

Backpack
I always carry a backpack with me on trail to hold my water, snacks, extra layers, and other necessities. I carry the Osprey 20 l.
Nalgene Water Bottle
Nalgene bottles are an absolute must for any adventure. Staying hydrated while out and exploring new things is my number one safety suggestion. Always carry a reusable bottle of water in your car or backpack even if you don't expect to be out long. My favorite Nalgenes are from REI.
Smartwool Socks
It might seem silly to think about the socks you wear while adventuring, but foot health and comfort is the most important thing while hiking. Wearing socks that are breathable and comfortable go a long way. My favorite hiking socks are Merino wool socks from Smartwool.
Camera
As a photographer I always bring my camera on any adventure no matter how small. But even if you're not a photographer (like my friend pictured to the left) it's always nice to capture memories and discover new ways of seeing through the eyes of a camera. And bringing a camera with you doesn't have to be expensive. It could be as easy as investing in a cheap point and shoot like these on amazon or even just using your phone. The best camera is the one you have with you which for most people is their iPhone.
Hiking Shoes
Wearing the right shoes/ boots is just as important as wearing the right socks. If you're feet are happy and comfortable then you're way more likely to be having a happy adventure. I suggest checking out REI for a great selection of hiking boots and shoes. My biggest piece of advice is to find a shoe that is lightweight with ankle support.
Clif Bar
I always carry a snack with me on the trail. Clif Bars have become a favorite of mine because they are small and easy to carry but also have lots of protein to fill me up fast.
Blanket
I keep a blanket in my car for impromptu picnics keeping warm and comfy when hanging in the outdoors, or relaxing on the beach. My favorite blanket is from Happy Earth. Their blankets are made from sustainable materials and reclaimed fibers.

Dress In Layers
The outdoor saying "dress like an onion" is so true. On any adventure be sure so come prepared with multiple layers and a rain coat. I typically dress in a t-shirt/ tank top, with a sweatshirt on top. Then I carry my REI Down Puffer incase I get cold. I also carry my Marmot rain jacket for unexpected rain showers. It also acts as a wind resistance for chilly windy days.
